It been a long time since I last posted on cloudtrance, almost 8 months but then I was quite busy with my fulltime job and the arrival of a little kid changes a lot of things. Anyways without beating about the bush, its time for me to get back to keep this site fresh and vibrant.

One of the things that can get confusing when one thinks about it is the defintive tasks of a webmaster. Basically because the web is evolving in a frenzy, truly because true blue webmasters with the requisite varied skillsets are very less, wholly because the challenges that he will face have doubled in the face of time. In toto though, the webmaster in today scenario is expected to do a lot of things.

Down below is a small treatise on what I feel a webmaster should be a master of, a basic listing of the roles he will be expected to play. A few points might seem repeated or similar but this should give a snapshot of a typical webmaster roles.

Webmaster’s Driving philosophy

Ensure that the website is a global medium that connects all partners, prospects, clients and constituents in a symbiotic relationship that accentuates the corporate strategic business objectives.

His Creative roles

>> Site Design / Redesign in conjunction with company’s brand image
>> Branding components - Brochures, PDF’s, White Papers, Newsletters
>> Relevant copy
>> Technology Blogs
>> Online Journals
>> Email Campaigns
>> Podcasts
>> Press Releases
>> Company Stationery
>> Internet Marketing
>> Marketing Collaterals

Technical Roles

>> Web server Administration
>> Database Integration for dynamic sites
>> Url Rewriting
>> Server Load vis a vis concurrent connections
>> Email functions
>> Site Search functions
>> RSS Feeds
>> Content Management Systems
>> Website Maintenance

Frequency of posts matter as much to the search engines as facilitate creating loyal readers.
The above mantra hits me in the gut since I have been guilty of not getting blog updates on fast mode. The key as the post title says is to hit the deck running.

To update the blog frequently and maintain a posting schedule is the hallmark of a good blogger. Lack of time can never be an excuse. As the wise men croon all the time, time management is not about managing time. It is about managing ourselves. Its all about exercising our writing muscles. Its simply about writing daily. Cut out the intertia and get rid of the flab. The copyblogger has more heavenly manna on exercising your writing here.

Tech blogger and former MS employee Robert Scoble has done a Nostradamus predicting that Mahalo, Facebook & Techmeme can put the curtains on Google as far as search is concerned. His latest hyperbole unfortunately does’nt pass much muster.

Number One, Mahalo by itself a dmoz clone whose goal is to human-write the top 20,000 search terms does’nt have the scalability that Google has. They simply cant capture the loooong tail of search and to know that more that a quarter of Google queries are completely new just shows where Mahalo is going to go kaput.

Number 2, his waft at Google’s algorithm being stuck in cement is just a no-brainer. Any SEO would tell you that Google changes its algo spots frequently in a constant effort to bring the perfect search results.

Number 3 Techmeme ‘fresh meat’ content listings gives you no option to hunt for old content. For older content, one just have to get back to good ol’ google. Techmeme might just give Digg, a dig in the ribs so to say.

Number 4 Scoble backing of facebook falls flat in the face when you consider that Google can use their own Orkut to integrate social networking in search results.
Is Scoble’s far fetched theories just pure linkbait in toto? Ironic for someone who does’nt think much of SEO.

Here biggie Danny Sullivan’s take on the issue.

The Google Labs platform added a new feather to its cap - a desi avatar in the form of Google Labs India, technology that would help Indians to conduct local languages searches, in 14 Indian and South Asian languages.

Coming close on the heels of Yahoo Inc launching portals in seven Indian languages, it serves as a pointer to the fact that the major search engines find the burgeoning Asian markets, especially populous India and China, an apt destination to expand and monetize their services in the long run. Google Labs for India would hit the nail on products that serve the Indian market, though not necessarily developed in India.

Under the spotlight are two technologies which sit on the testing hammer at the Google Labs website namely the Indic On-Screen Keyboard iGoogle Gadget and Google Indic Transliteration.

The Indic On-Screen Keyboard iGoogle Gadget facilitates search in 14 Indian languages through the use of an on-screen keyboard. What comes in really handy is the option for users to add their chosen language gadget to their personalized iGoogle home page.

Google Indic Transliteration goes a step further allowing users to key in Hindi using phonetically equivalent English text through an English keyboard. This was launched in Blogger earlier and would encourage vernacular users to use email and like without the handicap of not knowing English.

The Indian focus by major companies is not a recent phenomenon. IBM in fact has already developed speech recognition software that would enable Hindi speaking people to use emails as also operate ATM’s and IVR systems. Yahoo of course had introduced plug-in modules to its Instant messenger, a real panacea to those with an English handicap.

It’s a no-brainer really to expect more of Internet growth and penetration in areas outside of the major Indian cities. The icing on the cake would be the exponential growth of content in more of the local languages. Information in its entirety now is on the fast track to becoming universally accessible as the latest trends on the information highway aptly show.

Google has announced pricing options for both Gmail (email) and Picasa (photo services). The paid model would come in handy for those users who would want much more than the existing free allowance namely 1GB for picasa and 2.8 GB for Gmail. Annual prices are pegged at $20 for 6 GB. Other pricing models fall in the realm of 25GB for $75,100GB for $250 and 250GB for $500.

The North American continent might go gaga over Google, but in Asia, it is Yahoo that has stolen a march as a favourite with web users. A comscore survey this May in 10 asian countries has seen Google panting hard playing catch up with its perennial search rivals.

Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan have given the thumbs up to Yahoo while Australia, China, and New Zealand users prefer Microsoft to the much vaunted Google. The survey results would imply that the search stakes would just not a one horse race especially when Internet penetration in the most populous countries like India and China hits an upward trend..

Blogging might bring you joy if you can monetize it effectively, but the term ‘blogosphere’ does’nt appeal much to a lot of people if a recent survey by British pollsters YouGov is to be believed. This survey was done for Lulu.com, coverters of blogs into books also known as Blooks. When one considers that a lot size of just 2091 adults took part in the poll, it just does’nt seem a fair representation of the burgeoning web world.

Topping the charts is the word ‘Folksonomy’, a Web classification system. Blogosphere comes a close second. Not surprising that the term ‘blog’was’nt far behind at third. ‘Netiquette’, slang for Web etiquette came a courteous fourth. ‘Blook’ referring to a blog converted to a book, booked itself into fifth place. ‘Webinar’ held fort at the sixth place. The term ‘Vblog’ or Video Blog wandered into the seventh place. ‘Social Networking’ tagged its way to the eight place. The term ‘cookie’ cached itself in the ninth place. Might be hard to snare a back link from Wikipedia, but it was’nt very difficult for the term ‘Wiki’ to round off the top ten..

New words germinate and hatch as the web takes over. The ninth edition of the Collins English dictionary plans to include words like ‘me-media’, a term for personal content websites such as Facebook, and ‘godcast’, a religious service which has been converted to an MP3 format. The way things are, web lingo and web slang march on unfettered and there is the frightening prospect of a new language called Web-lish that would bury English for good on the web…

In a bid to offset privacy concerns and improve its privacy protection ratings, Search behemoth Google has agreed to cut down retention of user web search histories to 18 months from 24. This move apparently would mean that search information would be made anonymous after a year and a half.

Whenever you use Google for search, you leave lasting fingerprints that can help the Search Engine prepare a dossier on your tastes and interests, akin to a virtual profile of your existence. Though Google professes to keep this information protected, European online Privacy advocates have beamoned the lack of clear initiative from Google to really handle their fears. The Article 29 working party handling European Union privacy policy initiatives had very recently sent a memo to Google regarding the fact that user search history information has been kept for too long. The latest announcement by Google is aimed to placate these concerns.

Google’s takeover of online ad firm DoubleClick raised a few ruckus along the way. Very recently, there was a lot of serious concerns about Google Maps ‘Street View’ that it is a direct violation of people’s need for anonymity. The biggest fear is the possibility that security vulnerabilities might result in information falling in the wrong hands. What does Google’s privacy policy has to say? Tim O’Reilly has lots more to say on Google and Privacy stakes
